Chengdu Sport University, originally run under General Administration of Sport is now administrated by the General Administration of Sport and Sichuan province government, which mainly relies on the management of Sichuan province. The former Chengdu Sport University was the Sichuan Standing Junior Sports College established in 1942, which was renamed as Chengdu Sport Polytechnic in 1950. Approved by the state council in 1953, Southwest Physical Culture Institute was set up and renamed as Chengdu Institute of Physical Education in February of 1956. It was then incorporated with Chongqing Physical Culture Institute in 1961. Located in the southwest of downtown district of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and adjacent to Wuhou Temple, the world-famous historical site, Chengdu Sport University covers an area of over 400,000 square meters. It has advanced training gyms, modern teaching buildings, campus network, standard language labs and an evaluating center for Biomechanics. Chengdu Sport University has a competent teaching force, with a current total staff of over 700, among whom 457 are full-time teachers, 167 professors and associates, 189 teachers with second-level titles, 81 assistants and lab assistants, and over 60 umpires at international or national level. Over sixty years, our institute has produced many renowned sports specialists and scholars, among whom, over 50 are callers of the Academic Degrees Committee and the Discipline Appraisal Group under the state council; specialists of the Discipline Appraisal Group of National Foundation of Social science academic and technical leaders of Sichuan province, Youth academic and technical leader of the General Administration of Sport,specialists who enjoy special allowances of the state council; outstanding experts of Sichuan province and tutors of student doctors; as well as over 20 visiting professors or part-time professors at home or abroad. The university comprises the following Faculties: Physical Education, Sports Iatrology, Athletic Sports, Wu Shu, Economic Management, Journalism, and Foreign Languages and Hang Kong Gang Campus. There are 13 specialties of undergraduate course in the fields of Pedagogy, Iatrology, Literature, Administration, and Economics. They are Physical Education, Social Sports, Sports Training, Traditional National Sports, Traditional Chinese Medicine (T.C.M.) (orthopedics orientated), Human movement science, Journalism (sports journalism orientated), Public Utility Management (sports management orientated), Economics (sports economy orientated), English (sports English & foreign affairs orientated), Tourism Management (sports tourism orientated), Performing (body & action performance orientated), and Dancing (modern dancing & international-standard dancing orientated). Now the university has six postgraduate degree award stations approved by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Faculty: Sports Humanities, Human movement science, Sports Education and Training, National Traditional Sports, Sport Iatrology, and Sino-Western Combined Clinic Science. The university is also famous for experienced adult education. Chengdu Sport University has acquired the great achievements in Sports Humanities and the leading position for applying T.C.M. in prevention, therapy and recovery of sports injuries and tiredness. In the early 1960s, the first sports history research center was set up in the former university, the only one at that time in the country. Approved by the former National Sports Committee, the Sports History Research Institute was founded in the early 1980s. In 2001, it became one of the first research bases for Sport Social Sciences in the country. Sports History, Orthopedics, Wushu and Sports Physiology are the key subjects of the General Administration of Sport. Sports Humanities, Athletics Physical Science, Sports Training Science and Sports Iatrology are the key projects of Sichuan province. Our students won the champion in the first national basic skills contest for Physical Education Students and also gained the "Xin Miao Sports Scholarship" offered by the Ministry of Education. Taking on the heavy tasks of fostering the advanced athletes for the Olympic and Asian Games, the attached athletics school of the university (also the training base for higher-level athletes) has been highlighted in some athletics items such as art gymnastics, Wushu and weightlifting. In the last 3 years, the students gained around 30 gold medals in national contests, hundreds Athletes participated winning around 10 medals in international contests for country. Our teachers have undertaken and accomplished decades of key scientific research items offered by the National Social Science Funds, the Ministry of Education, the State Sport General Administration, and Sichuan province, including 10 projects which have been granted national or provincial prizes for teaching and science & technology progress.
