Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (hereafter FAFU) is a key university in its province with a 72-year history. In 1936, it was formerly called Agriculture Department at FukienChristianUniversity. After 1949, FukienAgricultureCollege was founded by combining Agriculture Departments of Xiamen University, FukienChristianUniversity and FukienProvincialAgricultureCollege. In 1958, Fujian Forestry College was also established from Forestry Department which was separated from Fujian Agriculture College. And in 2000, FAFU came into being as a result of the merger of FujianForestryCollege and Fujian Agriculture University (which was called FujianAgricultureCollege before 1994). Located in the western suburb of FuzhouCity, its campus occupies a ground space of more than 2,340,000 square meters with a floor space of 800,000 square meters. The facilities for teaching and research are worth more than 200 million yuan (RMB). FAFU owns 1 key national academic discipline, 1 key national academic discipline (for training), 1 national center for biological research (pilot), 2 key academic disciplines recognized and subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture, 1 key academic discip-line recognized and subsidized by State Forestry Bureau, 18 Fujian provincial key academic disciplin-es. It has 6 post-doctoral research centers and offers 6accredited disciplinary doctoral programs, 45 accredited branch disciplinary doctoral programs, 11 “Tier One” master’s programs, 78 “Tier Two” master’s programs, 3 for master in specialized subjects, and 15 master’s programs for in-service students from higher educational faculty. The university consists of 18 colleges with 63 specialties for majors and 43 for adult education. FAFU continuously strives for the basic status of talent training, focuses on the undergraduate education and centers around teaching. It also actively explores applied personnel and generalists training mode, improves education system of innovative talents training, steadily promote teaching materials and curriculum system reform and improve the quality of talent cultivating. Up to now, the university has 2 excellent courses at state level, 39 provincial level excellent courses, 1 national and 5 provincial representative centers for laboratory education, 3 national and 9 provincial specialty-building centers, 6 provincial experimental areas for innovative talent cultivating patterns and 5 provincial level teaching teams. Since 2000, the university has gained 13 provincial level teaching awards, including 5 first-place and 8 second-place certificates. Teaching and research experimental stations have been established in and outside the campus that include teaching forest farm of nearly 31 million sq. meters. It also has devoted departments to the literature on Taiwan and a consulting service for literature search of aca-demic journal in our country. To encourage independent innovation, FAFU has provided 31 national or provincial technological innovation platforms and 71 research centers funded by the university. As a result, 545 national or pro-vincial science and technology awards or social science awards have been bestowed on the university since 1978. Six of these awardsare listed in the first class of National Science and Techno-logy Award or the second class of National Technological Invention, 4 of which are listed in National Science Fair Awards, and 7 national awards by collaboration with other institutions. In the past 3 years, the university has conducted 1,160 research projects totaling 204,950,000 RMB in budget, of which received are 74 national or provincial science and technology awards, 15 provincial social science achievement awards and 130 achievement evaluations. The university has published 119 books and 480 papers in authorized journals. Focusing on the ideal of economy orientation and social service, it regards China Cross-Straits Technology and Projects Fair as a great platform for commer-cializing achievements in science and technology. Through this platform, FAFU has produced the most project contracts and received the greatest funding among all participants for 5 consecutive years. Based on the advantage of “four links”(“four links” refers to links between Fujian and Taiwan in geographical location, blood ties, culture and ties of kinship), FAFU has also established academic contact with universities and research institutes in Taiwan to increase cross-straits exchange in order to expand teaching areas. Up to now, universities such as JiayiUniversity and Pingtung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan, and many others from more than 20 countries have established cooperation with FAFU. In addition, the university has been authorized to enroll foreign and overseas Chinese students. It has also become the first in China to enroll students from Taiwan to attend adult education program. Meanwhile, the two programs of horticulture, agriculture resources and environ- ment for college students are conducted between FAFU and Nova Scotia Agriculture College in Cana- da by way of “2+2”(two years of study in FAFU and the other two in Nova Scotia Agriculture College) mode. Since 2005, more than 900 specialists, scientists or visitors from overseas have come to FAFU for delivery of speech, teaching, research or academic exchange.
