Guangxi University of Technology (GXUT), authorized by the China State Council, is a local engineering university directly under the leadership of the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Preparations to establish GXUT started in 1958. However, GXUT stopped enrolling students in 1961 and suspended its operations in 1962. In 1982, Guangxi Light Industry College, Guangxi Mechanical Engineering College and Guangxi Institute of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering merged together to form GXUT again. At present, the university covers an area of more than 197 acres, with a total floor space of 374,000 square meters. GXUT has 13 departments, two secondary colleges, five teaching sections, one independent college and 14 scientific research institutions. The university offers 42 undergraduate programs and five postgraduate programs under seven disciplines: engineering, natural science, management, liberal arts, economics, law and pedagogy, with engineering as its main focus while coordinating many disciplines. The university enrolls students from 28 provinces and municipalities and currently has a student population of over 32,000, including 19,000 postgraduate and undergraduate students, of which, about 6,000 study at the independent college, and over 12,000 adult students. There are more than 1,100 faculty and staff at the university, including nearly 300 staff with senior professional titles, such as full professors, associate professors, etc. About 70% of GXUT teaching staff have obtained doctorates and master’s degrees. GXUT persists in the idea of revitalizing Guangxi, gearing to the needs of the country and serving the society at its best while holding its feet in Liuzhou. GXUT integrates its own development with the prosperity of Liuzhou and Guangxi. With the help of the resources in Liuzhou and Guangxi, the university has given full play to its strong points and features to achieve its rapid development. At present, the university has one developing particular specialty at the national level, eight excellent specialties, nine superior courses, one teaching team, three demonstration centres for experimentation and teaching, five key or key developing disciplines, and two key laboratories at the provincial level. In 2000, GXUT was appointed as a national key training centre for vocational education teachers by China’s Ministry of Education (MOE). In 2005, GXUT was approved to offer five postgraduate programs by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the MOE: Mechanical Design and Theory, Control Theory and Engineering, Structural Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, and Enterprise Management. In the same year, GXUT received a superior mark in the Undergraduate Teaching Level Evaluation made by the MOE. GXUT has carried out the strategy of “strengthening the university with science and technology” and has advanced greatly in its scientific research. In recent years, GXUT has undertaken nearly 1,000 research programs, including the natural and the social science foundation programs at the national and provincial levels. The university’s research funding has increased substantially. Its faculty and staff have published over 130 monographs and nearly 4,000 academic papers at home and abroad, among which more than 200 have been taken as reference by SCI, EI and ISTP. The university has implemented an innovation program for carrying out cooperation in science and technology with business enterprises. GXUT has set up the Biochemical Engineering Technology Incubator, the Engineering Machinery and Technology Research Centre of Guangxi, the Guangxi Engineering Technology Research Centre for Prestressed Machine and Tool, the Public Technology Promotion Centre for Liuzhou Medium and Small-sized Enterprises with such enterprises and institutions as Liuzhou Hi-tech Development Zone, Liuzhou Engineering Machinery Company, Liuzhou OVM Machinery Co., Ltd., and Economic Commission of Liuzhou. The university has applied for various research programs together with business enterprises, including “State-level Spark Plan” project and “State-level Torch Program” project. The university actively explores ways to reform and improve its means of school operation. With the support of the Party Committees and the governments at the provincial and municipal levels, in 1994 the university set up a board of trustees together with 13 state-owned large and medium-sized enterprises including Liuzhou Iron and Steel Group and Liuzhou Engineering Machinery Company. Now the board consists of more than 40 trustees. For many years, the university has carried out close cooperation in fostering talent and scientific research with the local government and business enterprises, a process which promotes cooperation in production, teaching and research.
