Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU)

Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) is a multi-disciplinary national key university under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. It is a pioneer of modern agricultural education, research and extension, and one of the first agricultural institutions in to offer four-year bachelor programs. The earliest roots of the university can be traced back to 1902 to the Department of Agriculture of Sanjiang Normal School . In 1952, Nanjing Agricultural College was created from the merger of the Agricultural Department of Jinling University, the Agricultural Department of National Central University, along with some departments of the Agricultural College of Zhejiang University. Today the university is a “211 Project” institution and one of the 56 Chinese universities with a graduate school. It is ranked 39th of the top 100 schools according to the 2008 Chinese University Ranking List published by the China University Review Research Group of the China Academy of Management Science. The same group produced a list of 37 top research universities in which NAU was listed for the first time. The main campus of Nanjing Agricultural University is the Weigang campus located in the picturesque eastern suburbs of Nanjing near the world-renowned Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s Mausoleum. The university also has a satellite campus and runs the Jiangpu experimental farm, both located about 45 kilometers away in the Pukou district of Nanjing. All together, the university boasts an area of 590 hectares and includes 526,000 square meters of building floor space. There are 16 colleges in the university offering 59 Bachelor programs, 106 Master programs, and 65 PhD programs, as well 6 professional Master programs. The university also houses 13 postdoctoral stations. Total student enrollment is currently 32,130, including 16,020 full-time undergraduate and 6,890 postgraduate students. There are more than 2,680 staff, including two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: Professor Liu Dajun and Professor Gai Junyi, both crop genetics and breeding scientists. In 1999 and 2007, the university passed with “excellence” its appraisal during the comprehensive Undergraduate Teaching Quality Evaluation, organized and carried out by the Ministry of Education on a five-year cycle. The high profile of its education and research programs has made graduates of Nanjing Agricultural University very popular among employers and an attractive destination for high school graduates. With agriculture as its traditional core strength, the university has developed diverse branches of learning, including science, economics, management, engineering, law and the arts. At present, it has 14 national key disciplines and 23 ministerial and provincial key disciplines. The university prides itself on having three national laboratories and research centers, and more than 40 at the ministerial or provincial level. Since 2001, NAU researchers have conducted over 2,000 research programs with a total funding of 1.2 billion RMB, published over 6,000 papers (including 1,300 SCI and EI papers), won 7 national awards and more than 100 ministerial and provincial-level awards. The university maintains close cooperation and exchanges with over 100 universities and research institutes around the world, including 42 universities with which it has institutional agreements. Since 2001, NAU academics have participated in more than 60 international collaborative research programs. Several international research centers have been set up on campus, such as the Sino-US Joint Research Centre for Food Safety and Quality. The number of international education and training programs at NAU has also grown in recent years. In 2008, a total of 205 overseas students were enrolled in various degree programs, exchange programs, or language and culture programs.
